The annual planting day in July is one of Grow West’s biggest events, attracting over 200 volunteers and planting up to 4,000 native trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses in one day. The event is an important opportunity to rejuvenate and restore local landscapes for a greener and brighter future.
The annual event is run in partnership with Melbourne Water, Friends of Werribee Gorge and Long Forest Mallee, Bacchus Marsh Lions Club, Victorian Mobile Landcare Group, Moorabool Landcare Network, Moorabool Shire Council, Victorian National Parks Association, 15 trees and various other sponsoring organisations.
Our 2026 Community Planting Day was a tremendous success, with 230 volunteers coming together to plant 3,500 shrubs, grasses and trees along the 1000 Steps at Bald Hill, Darley. The day welcomed 100 participants from the Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Society, alongside 130 volunteers from local community groups including Scouts, a local geocaching group, Friends of Werribee Gorge and Long Forest Mallee, Moorabool Landcare Network, Bacchus Marsh Lions Club, Victorian Mobile Landcare Group and the Victorian National Parks Association. Their collective efforts will help enhance local biodiversity and create a healthier landscape for future generations.
Grow West Planting Day 2021
After the highly anticipated Grow West Community Planting Day had to be cancelled for the second year in a row, we’ve worked hard to ensure the trees still made it into the ground, with 4,000 indigenous trees and shrubs planted at Kel Shields Flora Reserve in Maddingley last week.
The Grow West annual community planting day event has been running for over 15 years, attracting over 200 volunteers across the state to help plant indigenous plants in the upper Werribee Catchment. The 2021 event was sadly cancelled twice this year, once on the 5thJune, World Environment Day and again on the 24th of July, due to coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.
